Lessons
The goal in our lesson program is to produce riders who have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of horsemanship, safe riding practices, compassion for their working partners, and a hunger for continued growth in their horse journey. We teach skills that are not only applicable to horses but carry over into all areas of life.
Lessons are scheduled by the hour with 45 min of mounted instruction. Groups are typically small with 3-5 students. New/young beginners learn and practice grooming and tacking, then ride for 30 minutes. Intermediate+ riders should spend the first 15 minuets independently warming up… we always recommend LOTS of walking or hills if footing is dry. Instructors reserve the right to shorten lessons at their discretion based on weather, attention span, or horse’s temperaments.
Keeping our lesson horses happy and comfortable is always a priority! We have several ponies suitable for beginners to start lessons on. However, due to the size of the ponies we currently have, at this time we can only accommodate beginner riders under 140lbs. Once students reach an intermediate level (cantering and small jumps), we can help find an appropriate pony/horse to lease or buy to continue progressing.
Our lessons are run by a monthly tuition. Payments are due at/by the first lesson. One lesson a month may be rescheduled with advanced notice. If rescheduling options can’t be coordinated, the student may be offered a practice ride in place of the lesson.
Lesson horses are assigned by the instructor, based on rider level, horse’s workload, and may change week to week. There are so many factors that go into planning the week! Do you have a favorite horse and want to have them committed to you for your lessons? Do you want extra horse time and practice rides? (Talk to Heidi about lease opportunities in the barn.)
Our program is very limited and your lesson slot is a ‘use it or lose it’ because we commit to having the time and a horse available. The instructor reserves the right to limit lesson time due to lack of concentration, low stamina, or weather conditions.
